Milan on a Budget: Fashion Capital, Backpacker Prices
Plan your trip to Milan
Milan Can Be Cheap. Really.
Milan's reputation as a money pit is overblown. Yes, the fashion district will bankrupt you, but Milan is also a university city with 200,000 students, a working-class history, and neighborhoods where €5 gets you a full meal. The trick is knowing where to look.
**Built-in budget advantages:**
- Walkable center (Duomo to Brera to Porta Romana is 30 minutes)
- Metro day pass (€7) covers the whole city
- Aperitivo = dinner (€8–€15 with unlimited buffet)
- Free church art (every church has something worth seeing)
- Panzerotti from Luini (€3) is a legitimate meal
- University districts (Città Studi) have cheap eats
Free and Cheap Attractions
**Completely free:**
- Duomo exterior (the facade is the best part, and it's outside)
- Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (walking through costs nothing, window-shopping is free)
- All churches — Sant'Eustorgio (frescoes by Michelangelo's teacher), San Maurizio (Milan's Sistine Chapel), Santa Maria delle Grazie (exterior)
- Parco Sempione and Castello Sforzesco grounds (free park, €5 for museum if you want)
- Navigli canals (walking the towpaths costs nothing)
- Street art in Isola and Zona Tortona
- Window-shopping in the Quadrilatero della Moda (free, depressing, inspiring)
**Cheap but worth it:**
- Duomo rooftop terraces (€10 by stairs, €14 by elevator) — panoramic city views
- Pinacoteca di Brera (€15) — one of Italy's best art museums
- The Last Supper (€15) — book months ahead, but it's worth every minute of planning
- Triennale di Milano (€12) — design museum, excellent exhibitions
**Free museum days:**
- State museums free first Sunday of the month
- Some private museums have free evenings (check current schedules)
Eating for Under €15
**Breakfast:**
- Coffee and brioche standing at any bar (€2–€3)
- Marchesi in Galleria (€8 sitting, but the setting is worth it once)
**Lunch:**
- Panzerotti from Luini (€3–€4) — fried pizza pockets, legendary, near Duomo
- Menu del giorno at any trattoria (€12–€16 with pasta, meat, and wine)
- Mercato Metropolitano stalls (€8–€12 for gourmet street food)
- Pizza al taglio by weight (€3–€5 for a big slice)
**Dinner:**
- Aperitivo (€8–€12) — your drink includes unlimited buffet access. Bar Basso, Doping, and N'Ombra de Vin all do excellent spreads
- Chinatown (Via Paolo Sarpi) — Milan has a significant Chinese population. Authentic dumplings, noodles, and bubble tea for €5–€8
- Kebab and shawarma near Stazione Centrale (€4–€6)
**Grocery stores:** Esselunga, Carrefour, and Lidl are everywhere. A €6 picnic (mozzarella, prosciutto, focaccia) in Parco Sempione beats a €20 tourist restaurant.
Accommodation on a Budget
**Hostels:**
- Ostello Bello (Brera, €30–€45 dorm, includes aperitivo)
- Combo Milano (Isola, €25–€40 dorm, design hostel)
- Queen Hostel (near Centrale, €20–€35 dorm, social events)
- Ostello Villa Olmo (Como, €22–€30, 40 min from Milan by train — lakeside bonus)
**Budget hotels:**
- Hotel Berlino (Porta Venezia, €60–€80/night, clean, basic)
- Hotel Montreal (Loreto, €50–€70/night, near Metro)
- B&Bs in Porta Romana and Città Studi (€45–€65/night)
**Airbnb:**
- Isola, Porta Romana, and Città Studi are 30–40% cheaper than Centro Storico
- Book 1+ months ahead for fashion week and Design Week (April)
**Avoid:**
- Anything near Duomo under €100/night (it's either a closet or a scam)
- Stazione Centrale area (noisy, sketchy at night, not worth the 'convenience')
- Fashion week dates unless you booked 6 months ahead
Transport: Metro, Trams, and Walking
**Metro day pass (€7)** — Covers all Metro lines and trams for 24 hours. Worth it if you're taking 3+ rides.
**Single Metro ticket (€2.20)** — Valid for 90 minutes on all transport. Good for occasional use.
**10-ride carnet (€19.50)** — Slightly cheaper per ride if you're staying several days.
**Airport transport:**
- Malpensa Express train (€13, 50 min to Centrale) — cheapest and most reliable
- Bus (€10, 50 min) — slightly cheaper, subject to traffic
- Taxi (€55 fixed rate to city center) — only if arriving late or with heavy luggage
**Walking:** Milan's center is flat and walkable. Duomo to Navigli is 30 minutes. Brera to Porta Romana is 25 minutes. Walking saves you €5–€10/day and you see more.
**Bike sharing:** BikeMi (€4.50/day) — Milan has decent bike lanes and flat terrain. Good for covering ground quickly.
